ConfusingDespite the cover page indicating this is designed for children to completed by themselves, I strongly advise against it. Sit down with them and be available. I would love to recommend this for homeschooling and as a review for older kids, however because it lacks adequate instruction at best this is not a good workbook for review, unless you prepare for the frustration you are about to engage in.We are using this (and other Kumon books) as a review and as an introduction to a solid course for older homeschoolers. We are completing these workbooks at a faster pace then how it is intended. We had no issues with Grade 4 in the same series. The illustrations in that workbook help you figure out what is going on and how that relates and is applied to measurement. The lack of in-depth instructions didn’t phase us until Grade 5’s workbook, which has 7 sections relating to decimal and fractions which offer (1) no (or sparse) explanation of how to work the problems and (2) adds to the confusion because it doesn’t take the time to show the relationship of decimals tenths and hundredths to the number line for a solid understanding. No problem. Regardless of skill or familiarity level, be prepared to struggle through and pull up a video to help your student gain confidence. Only someone who has recently been taught these concepts in full, will be able to fly through this. The rest of us have Youtube.Be aware that the concepts presented to your student in this workbook immediately jumps into how many tenths and hundredths there are based on the number place value system… and it is only after the fact there is a small box showing the place value system for tenth, hundredths, and thousandths. If this is the first time your student has seen this version of place value, they might be able to guess the pattern but won’t necessarily understand or gain confidence on what is going or what its importance is with just this material. After several of these lessons attempting to build up up to an understanding there is then 2 pages (lesson 8, pg16-17) offering a relatable measurement exercise. The following two lessons switch to fractions making a very weak tie back to decimals. This was a missed opportunity to show the material in lesson 8 as it would relate to fractions, in some way tying it all together to a shared measurement, before jumping into the remaining geometry lessons.Good Luck
